Andrea Mantegna was an Italian Renaissance painter and engraver, born in 1431 near Padua and known for his mastery of perspective and classical antiquity. A student of Roman archaeology and a pioneer in foreshortening, Mantegna brought a sculptural precision to his figures and compositions, often imbuing them with dramatic intensity. His work for the Gonzaga family in Mantua, especially the Camera degli Sposi (Room of the Newlyweds), is celebrated for its illusionistic ceiling and detailed frescoes that blend narrative and architectural elements. Mantegna’s influence extended well beyond his time, shaping the course of Renaissance art with his innovative use of space, depth, and emotional realism. He died in 1506 in Mantua, leaving a legacy of technically brilliant and intellectually rich works.
