Artist Biography:
Jean Hugo (1894–1984) was a French painter, illustrator, and set designer, and the great-grandson of the famous writer Victor Hugo. Born in Paris, Hugo became associated with avant-garde circles, including figures like Jean Cocteau and Pablo Picasso. His artistic career spanned multiple mediums, from painting to theater and film set design. Noted for his intimate and dreamlike style, Hugo's works often portrayed poetic landscapes and figures imbued with a sense of quiet mystery. In addition to his painting, he contributed significantly to stage design for ballet and theater, collaborating with renowned artists of his time. Hugo's work reflects a unique blend of Surrealism and classical influences, earning him a lasting place in 20th-century art.
