He earned a BFA from the University of California, Santa Cruz and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, then completed the Whitney Independent Study Program in New York. Middlebrook is best known for his distinctive “plank sculptures” — rough‑hewn slabs of hardwood painted with intricate, abstract geometric patterns that contrast the natural wood grain, along with large‑scale murals and mosaics.
