Trained by a British glassmaker, Magoichi Shimada founded Shimada Glass in 1888, becoming known for perfecting European-style glass, while Sojiro Sasaki started his own shop in 1902 and built a dominant wholesale network for oil lamps. Both companies successfully navigated industry shifts and world events, eventually becoming two of the only major glass manufacturers remaining in Japan. In 2002, the Houseware Divisions of Shimada's successor, Toyo Glass, and Sasaki Glass merged to form Toyo-Sasaki Glass, which has since become the dominant force in mass-produced Japanese glassware.
Very minor scratches on the base. Commensurate with age.
