The term "Murano" is applied to highly decorated Venetian glassware, typically made with a soda-lime "metal" on the island of Murano near Venice. Glassmaking was concentrated in Murano by a 1291 law to prevent fire disasters in the densely populated city and to enable better control over the artisans' secret recipes. Murano was Europe's major center for luxury glass from the High Middle Ages through the Renaissance, benefiting from Venice's trade connections with the more advanced glassmaking traditions of the Middle East. Although the monopoly declined after the rise of Northern European glassmaking and Napoleon's dissolution of the Venetian state in 1797, Murano glass has seen a revival and remains a major tourist attraction today.
