Jan van Vucht Tijssen was born in Njimegen in The Netherlands on September 5th, 1884. As a youth he was drawn to painting, and by the turn of the century he was already creating lifelike landscapes and cityscapes. A growing interest in Impressionism led him to hone his style further and move to Amsterdam when he was twenty, and for three years in a row from 1905 to 1907 he was awarded the Royal Prize for Painting. In the aftermath of World War I he returned to Nijmegen, where he remained the rest of his life, successfully working as a painter, photographer, watercolorist, and draftsman. Ever interested in breaking boundaries, he was exploring what would eventually become known as graphic novels when he died of natural causes, working with Dutch comic artists to craft his first foray into the "Leesportefeuille" form right up to his death on November 20th, 1970. Today his early paintings are particularly prized for the way they capture the Dutch countryside in timeless quality, and many of his works are found in museums and private collections throughout Scandinavia.

Commensurate with age.
