Saint Isaac’s Cathedral is a large architectural landmark cathedral that currently functions as a museum with occasional church services in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It is dedicated to Saint Isaac of Dalmatia, a patron saint of Peter the Great, who had been born on the feast day of that saint. It was originally ordered by Tsar Alexander I, the fourth consecutive church structure to occupy the space, and took forty years to build, from 1818 to 1858. Filled with decadent religious trappings and costing 1 million gold rubles to build, it was turned into a museum by the Soviet government in 1931 and has remained a museum ever since, with church services held in a side chapel since the collapse of the USSR in the 1990s. The neoclassical work is best known for its iconic dome, which influenced the design of the United States Capitol Building, and is generally considered the second most recognizable cathedral in Russia after Saint Basil’s in Moscow.

Great.
