Jan Beránek was a prominent Czech glassmaker born in Polevsko in 1933 who trained under his father, Emanuel Beránek, at the renowned glassworks in Škrdlovice. He worked continuously at the Škrdlovice foundry from 1948 until 1987, running his own workshop starting in 1957 and graduating from the Industrial School of Glass in Nový Bor. Alongside his brother and cousins, Beránek advanced his father’s foundational work, manually shaping countless vases, bowls, candlesticks, and paperweights over a career spanning four decades. The Škrdlovice glassworks fostered a highly collaborative creative environment where master glassmakers and prominent artists worked directly at the smelter to pioneer new metallurgical processing and color variations. This close artistic synergy inspired glass masters like Beránek to begin modeling their own original designs, which the foundry then produced in small commercial series starting in the late 1950s. Throughout his lifelong tenure, Beránek also skillfully brought to life the complex glass designs of celebrated artists such as František Vízner, Stanislav Libenský, and Pavel Hlava, working continuously right up until his death in 2014.
