James Tissot (1836-1902) was a French painter and illustrator celebrated for his detailed, elegant depictions of contemporary society during the late 19th century. Initially trained in Paris and influenced by academic art, he gained recognition for his early historical and biblical paintings before turning his focus to fashionable scenes of modern life, particularly Parisian women in elaborate dress, social gatherings, and leisure activities. Tissot’s work is noted for its meticulous attention to texture, costume, and gesture, as well as his use of luminous color and precise composition. Later in life, after relocating to London, he produced a series of illustrations for books and exhibitions, and devoted his final years to religious-themed paintings, blending realism with a narrative clarity that captured both character and social nuance.
