James McGinley is a prominent American realist painter born in 1937 who achieved early recognition as a childhood prodigy in Jersey City, New Jersey. Raised in a multigenerational family of artists, he studied fine arts under John R. Grabach at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts before earning a prestigious scholarship to study in Madrid at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. While in Spain, McGinley was deeply influenced by the legendary master Joaquín Sorolla, inspiring him to emulate Sorolla’s clean brushstrokes across a wide variety of subjects. Over the following decades he balanced his creative output by working as a master art restorer, a role that allowed him to intimately analyze the exact painting techniques of masters like Whistler and Degas. He later relocated to Sullivan County, New York, where he established himself as a distinguished leader of the School of Delaware River Painters. Throughout his highly decorated career McGinley won numerous honors, including “Best in Show” from the American Artists Professional League, and his landscapes, wildlife, and western scenes are held in major corporate collections such as AT&T. He passed away on January 21st, 2021 in Milanville, Pennsylvania due to complications of COVID-19.
