James Groody (born 1940) is an American artist based in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, known for his inventive use of “abstract illusion,” a technique designed to create a three-dimensional effect that blends foreground and background elements. After completing military service, he began as a commercial illustrator before returning to the Delaware Valley to focus on fine art, developing a distinctive and individualistic style. Groody works across various media, including oil painting, collage, printmaking, and mixed media, with his style encompassing contemporary impressionism, modernism, and abstract-expressionist influences. His work has been exhibited in galleries and private collections, appealing to collectors who value his unique approach to depth, perception, and visual layering.
