Jacques Quillery was born in North Africa in 1950 and educated in France, developing an early passion for painting. He gravitated towards Impressionism and Fauvism while studying Philosophy at L’Academie Ingres en Montauban, with most of his art lessons coming from Gérard Mounier, but his involvement in the May 1968 protests led him to flee the country to Costa Rica, where he has lived and worked ever since. Though he temporarily paused his artistic pursuits to build a highly successful career in the tourism industry, he later returned to painting, adopting acrylics and mixed media techniques to blend European artistic traditions with Latin American influences. In addition to staging individual gallery exhibitions, Quillery created his “best permanent exhibit” by decorating the rooms and public spaces of the Hotel Bougainvillea with over 150 original paintings. Later in his career he partnered with his sons to pioneer large-format digital giclée prints, collaborating with interior designers to place his artwork in prominent hotels, corporate offices, and private collections nationwide, still producing new works to this day.
