Jacob Petit, born Jacob Mordecai in 1796, was a celebrated French manufacturer of porcelain in the 19th Century. After studying drawing in the studio of Antoine-Jean Gros, a follower of Jacques-Louis David, Petit joined the Sevres Manufactory in 1822, where he painted porcelain wares. After traveling and studying throughout Europe he returned to France in 1830 and bought a porcelain factory in Fontainebleau with his brother Mardochee. Later he opened a workshop in Paris in 1863, where his vases, statuettes, and clocks became famous for their ornamental character, pastel colors, and their reinterpretation of the neo-Rococo style of the early 19th Century. He passed away in 1868. This cachepot - a French term for what is usually called in modern English a “planter” for a plant and its flowerpot - is exquisitely detailed, a prime example of his work.
