Gustave Serrurier-Bovy was born in Liege, Belgium in 1858. When he traveled to London in 1884 he became interested in the Arts and Crafts Movement, and was particularly fascinated by the works of William Morris. When he returned to Liege he began incorporating the new movements concepts into his creations, including building a villa for himself called “L’Aube” in the Parc de Cointe. His radical innovations in architecture and furniture are credited along with the work of Paul Hankar, Victor Horta and Henry van de Velde for creating the Art Nouveau style, first coined by Paris art dealer Siegfried Bing. Many of his works are on display at the Musee d’Orsay in Paris, and demonstrate the unique use of asymmetry and rustic techniques that took the English style to new heights. He died in Liege in 1910.
