Irving Amen (1918-2011) was a prolific American artist who showed early talent, earning a scholarship to the Pratt Institute at the age of fourteen. During his military service in World War II he managed mural projects in the United States and Belgium before gaining national recognition with a solo woodcut exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution in 1949. His extensive travels throughout Italy, Israel, and Greece inspired diverse works, including a permanent color block printing exhibit at the Smithsonian and a set of monumental stained glass windows for a synagogue in Ohio. Throughout his career, Amen taught at prestigious universities and was elected to the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno, a distinguished organization once joined by his idol, Michelangelo. He spent his later years living and working in Boca Raton, Florida, leaving behind a legacy of prints and paintings that frequently explored themes of music, chess, and Jewish heritage.
