They married there on July 29th, 1935 and lived on a trawler traveling to Pelican, Ketchikan, and finally back to Sitka over the next decade with their two children, while she taught herself to paint and began to explore various forms of indigenous art. In 1949 she produced her first book illustration for the Sitka Printing Company, and went on to make woodcuts, wood engravings, and stonecut prints throughout the rest of her life. In 1953 Dale DeArmond moved to Juneau, where her husband was executive assistant to territorial governor B. Frank Heintzleman, and she worked first for the Alaska Territorial Library before becoming the director of the Juneau City Library from 1958 to 1979.
