Irene Stry was a Hungarian-born American artist known for her Impressionist-inspired landscapes, coastal scenes, and colorful still-life paintings. After immigrating to the United States in 1923 with her husband, fellow artist Eric Stry, she became active in the Provincetown and Truro art communities of Cape Cod during the 1930s through the 1950s. Stry exhibited with the Society of Independent Artists in New York and often signed her work “I. Stry” as well as “Clair.” Her paintings are characterized by expressive brushwork, vibrant color, and a strong interest in the light and atmosphere of seaside environments, particularly the landscapes of Cape Cod. She continued painting until her death in St. Johns, Florida, in 1963, and her work remains appreciated by collectors of early 20th-century American Impressionism.
