Pierre Paulin was born in Paris on July 9th, 1927 and trained to become a ceramicist and stone carver after failing his Baccalaureat, but an injury to his right arm during a fistfight led him to attend the Ecole Camondo where he developed a passion for Scandinavian and Japanese furniture design aesthetics. He worked for the Gascoin company in Le Havre after having his debut exhibition at the Salon des arts menagers in 1953, and after a brief stint at the Thonet company experimenting with chairs made out of swimwear he joined the Maastricht-based Dutch manufacturers Artifort. Throughout the 60s and 70s he gained worldwide attention for his unique, lightweight, curvaceous chair designs, including the mushroom, tongue, and tulip variants that became synonymous with Mid Century Modern design and inspired fellow designers like Olivier Mourgue. From 1979 when he launched his own consultancy until his death on June 13th, 2009 he designed multiple apartments, offices, and interiors for celebrities, museums, and major companies around the globe, and his influential designs are still highly sought after by collectors to this day.
