This is an important English longcase clock by Thomas Clowes of Nantwich, England. It has the maker's name above the clock dial, the dial is a large piece with fine engraving, and it has the original pendulum and three weights. Thomas Clowes worked in the area in the late 1700's. Nantwich was an important center for clockmaking in England, and the Nantwich Museum in Cheshire has only located and catalogued about 140 clocks by the different makers in Nantwich. Only a handful by Thomas Clowes are known to exist, according to an article by Andrew Lamberton titled "Clock Making in Nantwich". The clock has three brass ball finials and the middle finial has an eagle on top. Two rosettes are inlaid near the middle finial. Beautiful brass spandrels enclose the clock face. Square fluted colonettes flank the dial door. The serpentine arched pendulum door is inlaid with an oval grain panel, there are chamfered front corners, and the clock is raised on four bracket feet. The clock also plays two sets of chimes. With provenance. Dimensions: 21 1/2 in. wide x 11 in. deep x 89 1/2 in. high (about 7 1/2 ft tall).
