Howard Chesner Behrens, born on August 20th, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois, was an American painter renowned for his vibrant, palette-knife paintings that often reflected his love of travel, photography, and color theory. Educated at the University of Maryland, College Park, he earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in painting and sculpture before working seventeen years at the U.S. Government Printing Office. In retirement, Behrens pursued painting full-time, achieving widespread popularity through galleries, auctions, cruise ships, and major retail outlets. Living in Potomac, Maryland after his second marriage, he continued producing thick, post-Impressionist-inspired canvases until his death on April 14th, 2014, following a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
