Artist Biography:
Alberto Vargas (1896–1982) was a celebrated Peruvian American artist known for his glamorous, idealized pinup paintings that became iconic during the mid-20th century. Starting his career as an illustrator for *Ziegfeld Follies* in the 1920s, Vargas achieved widespread fame during World War II with his “Varga Girls” series for *Esquire* magazine, which boosted soldiers' morale with images of beautiful, alluring women rendered in soft, airbrushed tones. His work was distinguished by its delicate, realistic portrayal of the female form, often characterized by long legs, flowing hair, and sensuous but tasteful poses. Vargas’s later work, especially with *Playboy* in the 1960s and 70s, continued to influence American pop culture and defined much of the pinup aesthetic, securing his legacy as a master of pinup art. His style and attention to detail remain influential in art and fashion, making Vargas one of the most iconic pinup artists of his era.
