Héctor Nájera was a painter, poet, engraver, and sculptor born in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico in 1931. He studied drawing, painting, and sculpture with the master Antonio Decanini in 1946, and obtained a scholarship to study sculpture at the Tecnologico de Monterrey Institute with the master Adolfo Labner in 1949. He taught literature at the University of Nuevo Leon before he was even 20, at which time he emigrated to the United States, setting up a studio in Los Angeles, California. From 1950 to 1964 he exhibited his paintings at many galleries across the country and in Europe, and lived and worked in New York, London, and Paris for short periods of time. In 1965 Nájera returned to Mexico and settled in Guadalajara to continue to paint more and more abstract images. His works can be found in private and public collections all over the world, as well as in more than 50 museums in 30 countries and most of Mexico’s foreign embassies. He passed away in 2004 while visiting the United States for a retrospective showing of his early works.
