Hartmann Ultrasuede Rolling Suitcase. Cream color, 4 wheels. Size: 26 x 20 x 8 in. #5596 . In 1864 a Bavarian trunkmaker named Joseph S. Hartmann emigrated to the United States, first working in New York City before eventually moving to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he established Hartmann Luggage in 1877. By the time he died in 1925 over half a million of his cases and trunks were in use worldwide, and the company had a firm reputation for durability, quality and style. In 1956 the company opened a manufacturing operation in Lebanon, Tennessee, and the company’s headquarters and plant facilities followed in 1959. In 1973 the visionary designer Roy Halston Frowick collaborated with the company to create a line of suitcases, bags, and other luggage with Ultrasuede material. Long after the collaboration his innovative design and the soft matte material was a highlight of the brand. The company was sold to Samsonite in May 2012, and the factory and offices were closed in December that same year. This suitcase has two separated interior areas created by easily detaching clasps, and is secured with two silver tone Touch-O-Matic locks. The wheels, pulling strap, and the condition of the Ultrasuede suggests that this piece is from the 1980s or 90s.
