Carol Christian and Len Brown, Oceanic (Pitcairn), Two Carved Miro Wood Sharks. Both signed. Dated 2005 on smaller shark. Size (largest): 15 3/4 X 6 X 3 1/2 in. #5348, #5349 . Miro is an evergreen coniferous tree endemic to New Zealand. The trees can live up to 600 years and their wood is prized for its dark hue, making it perfect for carvings like these. The Pitcairn Islands are a group of four volcanic islands in one of the most remote parts of the South Pacific Ocean, with French Polynesia the closest inhabited area nearly 700 miles away. The Islanders are a unique gene pool, a biracial ethnic group descended mostly from nine mutineers of the HMS Bounty in 1789 and a handful of Tahitian consorts, as is still apparent from the surnames of many of the islanders. The mutiny and its aftermath have been the subject of many books and films. As of January 2020, the territory had only 47 permanent inhabitants. The two artists, Carol Christian and Len Brown, are 6th generation Pitcairn Island direct descendents of Fletcher Christian, the leader of the mutiny.
