Born in the Bronx in 1924, Harold Altman trained from an early age at the Art Students League, Cooper Union School, and Black Mountain College before finishing his studies in 1952 at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris. Altman had an affinity for painting the city streets, parks, and people going about their daily lives, and although he settled in the village of Lemont, Pennsylvania in 1962 he continued to produce paintings and prints of Paris streets, Central Park, and many other iconic locations. A prolific draftsman who became obsessed with printmaking in the later half of his life, Altman produced more than 1200 unique editions of lithographs and etchings, espousing that “mastery of endless variation on a simple theme” was key to becoming a true artist. He developed a unique and highly-technical process that continued to evolve over decades and was instrumental to the proliferation of art to the masses in the late 20th Century, and he had more than 300 one man exhibitions in his lifetime, with works in dozens of museums all over the world when he died on July 28th, 2003.
