Born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1st, 1926 in Los Angeles, California, Marilyn Monroe spent much of her childhood in foster homes and orphanages. She began her career as a model before signing with 20th Century Fox in 1946 and adopting her famous stage name. Rising to stardom in the early 1950s, she became a massive Hollywood sex symbol with roles in films like Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Some Like It Hot. Known for her signature platinum blonde hair and charm, she sought to be taken seriously as an actress, studying at the Actors Studio. Despite her fame, she faced personal challenges, including three failed marriages to James Dougherty, Joe DiMaggio, and Arthur Miller. Monroe died on August 5th, 1962 at the age of 36 from a drug overdose, mourned and remembered still as a globally recognized pop-culture icon.
