George Walbye (born 1941) is a self-taught bronze sculptor rooted in the Rocky Mountain West, having spent his early years in Wyoming and now based in Loveland, Colorado. His work often draws on the landscapes, wildlife, and cultural heritage of the high plains—Indians, cowboys, mountain men and women appear frequently in his pieces. He uses the classical lost-wax casting method (where a wax original is used to make a mould for the bronze) and balances tradition with contemporary design—his vessels, bowls, and relief objects show strong design elements plus ornamentation inspired by American Indian art. Walbye’s bronzes are exhibited widely, and found in private collections in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, and some are permanently displayed in places like the Benson Sculpture Garden.
