A self-taught artist with no formal or informal art training, gaZbo dean suddenly began painting in 1997 during convalescence after being bitten by a deer tick and developing lyme disease. Using mostly house paint, Q-tips, and sticks, gaZbo paints surreal and psychedelic images of people and experiences from his past, and after his children helped him sell his first pieces he became hooked. “gazbo dean” is a childhood nickname given to him by his older brother, and other than his birth year (1947) and his studio location (Tucson, Arizona), little else is known about the enigmatic artist’s life.
