G. E. “Buddy” Mullan (1943–2015) was an internationally recognized American artist celebrated for his distinctive paintings blending Southwestern imagery with sacred art and religious iconography. Born in Tyler, Texas, and raised in Temple, he studied at St. Mary’s University and a Benedictine monastery before working as a teacher of theology and art. In 1980, he devoted himself to painting full time, initially creating works inspired by the American Southwest and Native American culture before focusing increasingly on religious commissions in 1995. His intricate style combines Italo-Byzantine influences, traditional iconography, and the Mexican and Southwestern santos tradition, using lyrical lines, complex geometric forms, and layered colors to create richly detailed compositions. His painting San Antonio de Yanaguana was presented to Pope John Paul II in 1987 and became part of the Vatican collection. Mullan also designed stained-glass windows and contributed to the sanctuary of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in San Antonio, leaving a lasting legacy at the intersection of art, faith, and cultural heritage.
