Frank Colson (1931–2015) was an American sculptor, educator, and innovator born in Paris and long associated with Sarasota, Florida. Trained at Scripps College and Syracuse University, he worked primarily in clay, bronze, and mixed media, developing a distinctive “neo-primitive” style influenced by extensive world travel and indigenous artistic traditions. Colson founded the Colson School of Art in Sarasota in 1963, where he taught pottery and sculpture and pioneered advances in ceramic and bronze-casting techniques, including the Shellspen ceramic-shell lost-wax process. His work included mask-like wall sculptures, metamorphic animals, public monuments, and numerous architectural and civic commissions, and he became an influential figure in Sarasota’s arts community through his teaching, foundry work, and public-art service.
