Frank Colson (1931–2015) was an American sculptor, ceramic artist, teacher, and innovator who was born in Paris, France, and became a prominent figure in Sarasota’s art community. He earned a B.F.A. from Scripps College in 1957, studying with ceramic artists Paul Soldner and Richard Petterson, and an M.S. from Syracuse University in 1959. In 1963 he established the Colson School of Art in Sarasota, where he taught ceramics and developed innovative techniques for pottery and bronze casting. Colson worked in clay, bronze, and mixed media, creating distinctive mask-like wall sculptures and stylized, metamorphic animals, including horses. He described his artistic approach as “neo-primitive,” drawing inspiration from extensive travels and the indigenous and folk art traditions he encountered around the world.
