Francois Moreau (1832-1926) French, Bronze and Marble Sculpture. Depicts a young man in a hat resting on a uniquely shaped outcropping. A plaque at the bottom gives the attribution and states that it won a Gold Award, as well as the title: "Botteleur." The word "France" is embossed on the back, and two drilled holes bookending the word suggest that it was connected to a different base at one time before being affixed to the round marble base with a felt bottom it rests on now.
Condition: Loose on base.
Size: 4 1/2 x 4 x 11 in.
Hippolyte Francois Moreau was born in Dijon, France on April 1st, 1832. Known professionally as Francois Moreau for most of his working life, he was the second son of the sculptor Jean-Baptiste-Louis-Joseph Moreau, and trained from an early age in his father’s workshop. In the 1850s he moved with his two brothers Mathurin and Auguste to Paris, where they studied under Francois Jouffroy at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. From 1863 to 1914 he exhibited at the Salon des Artiste Francais, and won medals for his work at both the 1878 and 1900 World’s Fair. His work Alexis Claude Clairaut, completed in 1880, is a centerpiece of the Paris City Hall. His statuettes often focused on peasants and lower class workers, although he occasionally produced busts of aristocracy, and he worked mainly in bronze but also incorporated pewter, marble, and spelter into his pieces as well. Later in life he began to produce vases, letter openers, and other objects, exploring other mediums as well like painting and drawing, and most of his works can now be found in a wing dedicated to him at the Museum of Fine Arts in Dijon. He passed away on January 4th, 1926 in Neuilly-sur-Seine.
