Francis Davis (20th Century) French, Oil on Canvas. Depicting a park with trees, birds, and people sitting/walking. Signed F. Davis in the lower right. Information on the back from Merrill Chase Galleries. As a young man, Davis studied under some of the great Impressionists and was deeply influenced by the Fauvist School of the early 1900's. After serving in the French Foreign Legion, Davis changed his style of painting to the point where it became expressionistic and surrealistic. He achieved a degree of importance and recognition in these areas of endeavor. Davis suffered a near-fatal stroke when he was 81, which resulted in a partial paralysis of the left side, and loss of memory. During his convalescence, his daughter encouraged him to try painting again by bringing him paints and canvases. His first efforts, reminiscent of his early years under the great impressionists, revealed beautiful tones of reflected light.
