Kalaga, traditionally known as shwe gyi do, is a heavily embroidered Burmese appliqué tapestry made of padded fabric figures sewn onto velvet or cotton backgrounds. Originating during the Konbaung Dynasty in the mid-19th century, the art form reached its peak under King Mindon Min when velvet became popular at the royal court. Decorated with gold thread, sequins, beads, and glass stones, these intricate tapestries depict traditional classical plays like the Ramayana and Jataka and have influenced textile traditions across Southeast Asia.
