Léon Bakst (1866-1924) is best known for revolutionizing theatrical design with his exotic and colorful sets and costumes for Sergei Diaghilev’s dance company. A Russian painter, illustrator, and stage designer who co-founded the influential World of Art group in St. Petersburg, he initially gained recognition for his portraiture and graphic art. He rose to international prominence through his work for Ballets Russes, creating opulent sets and costumes for iconic productions like Schéhérazade and Cléopâtre that are still duplicated to this day. Characterized by vibrant colors, sinuous lines, and Orientalist sensuality, Bakst’s groundbreaking aesthetic left a lasting mark on theatrical decor, interior design, and haute couture long after his passing, particularly influencing artists and designers like Erte, George Barbier, and Louis Icart.
