The style's name was coined by a critic after viewing Claude Monet's Impression, Soleil Levant at the movement's first independent exhibition in 1874. Though initially facing harsh opposition, Impressionist methods quickly became influential globally, with the style soon followed by analogous movements in music and literature. In reaction to Impressionism's naturalistic focus, Post-Impressionism emerged, led by artists like Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh, emphasizing abstract qualities and symbolic content.
