The Vitra Design Museum is a privately owned museum for design in Weil am Rhein, Germany. It was famously designed by the “starchitect” Frank Gehry as his first structure in Europe, who used deconstructivism to make the building itself a work of art along with the objects inside. Rolf Fehlbaum, the son of the architectural giant Vitra founders Willi and Erika Fehlbaum, founded the museum in 1989 as an independent private foundation. The museum’s collection, focusing on furniture and interior design, is centered on the work of mid century modern designers Charles and Ray Eames, as well as contemporaries such as George Nelson, Alvar Aalto, Verner Panton, Dieter Rams, Jean Prouvé, Richard Hutten, Michael Thonet, and many more. It is one of the world’s largest collections of modern furniture design, including pieces representative of all major periods and styles from the beginning of the 19th Century onwards. In addition the museum produces workshops and art lessons, as well as publications and an extensive archive, a restoration and conservation laboratory, and a research library.
