The American design period between the 1970s and 80s was dominated by a turn away from the simplistic lines of early mid century modern into something more vibrant (sometimes termed Neomodernism), usually unified by a focus on bright colors, straighter lines, and a mix of casual flair and kitsch. This was due in part to the pushback against the rampant commercialism that had influenced design concepts in the 1970s, while simultaneously attempting to appeal to the newer urban middle class, youthful Gen Xers, and suburban-bound yuppies all at once. While latecomers to the MCM movement like Craig Ellwood and Gene Leedy sought to gently shift into more contemporary styles by still embracing older Danish-dominated trends, Italian designers and the Memphis Group made drastic shifts to the style most commonly associated with the late 1980s and early 90s. This shift, however, was soon co-opted into so-called Corporate Memphis, as companies from Apple to Taco Bell began to combine the new, bright, wacky color schemes and shapes into something palatable to the majority. The late 90s and early 2000s was dominated by a shift back into softer, subdued styles, but in the 21st Century the 1980s aesthetic has experienced a resurgence due to film and musical nostalgia in the late 2010s.
