Florence Putterman was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 14th, 1927 and was drawn to art at an early age, obtaining her Masters of Fine Arts from Pennsylvania State University and becoming an early proponent of allusory and Symbolist abstract art at a time when the field was dominated by men. Settling in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, she constantly reinvented her work throughout her career, working in many mediums including photography, found object collages, acrylics on canvas, and woodcuts, and received numerous accolades including the Distinguished Alumni Award from Pennsylvania State University and a National Endowment Grant in 1979. Her paintings and prints are included in countless collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Chicago Art Institute, and the Gulf Coast Museum of Florida, and she held hundreds of individual and group exhibitions throughout the country. After moving to Sarasota, Florida in the 1990s she became active in the arts colony there, and taught at various universities, schools, and community organizations right up until her death on August 5th, 2021.
