Philip and Kelvin LaVerne were father-and-son artist–furniture makers known for one-of-a-kind and limited-edition bronze and pewter tables and cabinets that blended function with sculptural artistry. Beginning around 1954, they developed a distinctive patination process based on centuries-old bronze-casting techniques, burying hand-carved bas-relief metal slabs in special soil for weeks to achieve naturally oxidized surfaces—a method that took six years to refine. Their work, which Philip described as “functional art,” ranged from classically inspired flat surfaces to later, more sculptural forms and was promoted through their New York gallery and a bold 1960s advertising campaign.
