Ernest Maindron (1838-1908) was a French writer, art historian, and early poster artist whose work helped document and shape the cultural landscape of late 19th-century France. Originally trained in law and history, Maindron became a prominent critic and chronicler of the arts, publishing studies on sculpture, illustration, and decorative design. He is best remembered for his collaborations with the pioneering printer Jules Chéret, with whom he helped popularize the modern illustrated poster—an art form that transformed Parisian streets into open-air galleries. Maindron’s own poster designs, though fewer in number, reflect the vivid color and graphic clarity that defined the Belle Époque’s visual language, bridging the worlds of scholarship and creative practice.
