Ernest Jean Chevalier (1862-1917) was a French painter most noted for his seascapes, coastal scenes, and marine vistas, especially along the western shores of France. Born in La Rochelle, he captured the play of light, weather, and atmosphere in places like Oléron Island, Brittany, and the Charente coast with subtle coloring and a painterly touch that reflects both realism and mood. Chevalier exhibited widely—including at the Universal Exhibitions—and painted not only maritime subjects but also landscapes of central France. He was a student of established artists like Gervex and Roll, and in recognition of his contributions to French marine art was decorated with the Legion of Honor in 1913.
