Eric Olson first discovered his love for clay in 1994 while taking a class through the Craftshop at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Under the instruction of a very disciplined teacher he was introduced to the techniques he still uses today, over thirty years later. After six months of daily practice he left school to open his own business making and selling pottery called Common Ground. For the first seven years he traveled the country selling his work at juried fine art shows, encountering many accomplished potters who shared their knowledge and frequently collaborated with him. A pottery collector he met at one of these shows introduced him to antique creators, and his style began to reflect his research, adopting many characteristics and designs of the early Arts and Crafts period. He began to travel and exhibit outside the United States, and by the mid 2000s his pieces were in collections all over the world. He began teaching courses at his alma mater as well as other schools in Michigan and Montreal, but in the early 2010s he made a trip to West Palm Beach and fell in love with the endless warmth, building a permanent home studio there where he continues to make new pieces. He continues to teach pottery courses through the Armory Art Center, where he also exhibits and sells his new works regularly.
