Emmett Watson (1893-1955) American, Framed Star Weekly Cover Illustration Print. Depicts personifications of America (Uncle Sam) and Great Britain getting ready to join forces against the Nazis. Dated May 23, 1942, on the top banner, along with "Toronto" and the price of "10 Cents." Signature in the print bottom left.

Emmett St. Clair Watson, Jr. was born on January 30th, 1893 in Richmond, Virginia and went to work as an illustrator for Metropolitan Engraving right out of high school. In 1916 he moved to New York City, where he took classes at the Art Students League and the Grand Central School of Art before enlisting when the United States entered World War I a year later. He was soon transferred to the Intelligence Section of Headquarters Company of 69th Infantry Regiment and sent to France to work as a cartographer, before returning to New York after the Armistice and opening his own art studio creating covers, illustrations, and advertisements for popular magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post, Judge, Collier’s, and Life. His work also appeared in pulp magazines such as Argosy, Railroad Stories, and Detective Fiction Weekly during the Great Depression, and after his marriage in 1921 he moved his family to Scarsdale, where he produced wartime posters and stylish covers for young adult books and magazines right up until his death in New Canaan, Connecticut on May 7th, 1955.
