Emile Albert Gruppé (1896-1978) was an American Impressionist painter known for his landscapes, figures, and portraits. Born in New York, he spent his childhood in the Netherlands, where his father, Charles P. Gruppé, was a painter with the Hague School of art. Emile later studied at the National Academy in New York City and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, with his style heavily influenced by the French Impressionist Claude Monet. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War I he settled in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where he became a prominent member of the Cape Ann school of artists and ran the Gloucester School of Painting from 1940 to 1970. In his later life he wintered in Naples, Florida, where he painted tropical scenes and authored two books on painting technique while acting as a member of numerous art associations, and today his work is featured in his family's galleries in Massachusetts and Vermont as well as in private collections along the East Coast.
