Emil Rau (1858–1937) was a German painter, illustrator, and writer associated with late 19th- and early 20th-century academic and genre art. Born in Dresden, Rau studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and became known for his detailed depictions of rural life, historical subjects, and idealized scenes influenced by German Romanticism and Realism. In addition to painting, he wrote extensively on art and artists, contributing essays and criticism that helped document European artistic movements of his era. His works were widely exhibited in Germany and abroad, and his imagery became popular through reproductions and illustrated publications. Today, Rau is remembered both for his paintings and for his contributions to art literature during a transformative period in European cultural history.
