This is an oil on board by Elmer Stanley Hader, a California artist who worked with his wife, Berta. Together they illustrated over 70 children’s books and in 1948 they won the Caldecott Medal, which honored the most distinguished American picture book for children. After they married, they moved to a small town on the Hudson River in New York, where they contributed artwork to many magazines, including pictures and cutouts of children in national costume. John Steinbeck was so impressed by Elmer’s work that he invited Elmer to do the cover for The Grapes of Wrath, and Elmer eventually did the cover for Steinbeck’s East of Eden.
This attractive painting is signed with the artist's full name in the lower right. It is also signed "Elmer Hader" and dated September 1937 on the back. The overall size is 29 1/2 x 35 1/4 in. wide and the sight size is 17 1/2 x 23 1/2 in. wide.
