The Elgin National Watch Company was a major American watchmaker that operated from 1864 to 1968. Founded by former Waltham Watch Company employees, the company established its primary manufacturing complex in Elgin, Illinois, which became the world's largest dedicated watchmaking site. The company produced watches under popular names such as Elgin, Lord Elgin, and Lady Elgin, even building an observatory in 1910 to ensure precision timekeeping. During World War II, Elgin shifted operations to the defense industry, manufacturing various military instruments and components. Manufacturing later moved to South Carolina, and the original Illinois factory, responsible for nearly half of all US-made pocket watches by that point, closed in the 1960s.
