Edwin Forbes (1839–1895) was an American painter and illustrator best known for his evocative sketches and paintings of the American Civil War. Born in New York City, Forbes trained as a lithographer before joining the Union Army as a special artist for publications, where he documented battles, encampments, and military life with striking immediacy and realism. His work, often executed in pen, ink, and watercolor, combined journalistic accuracy with artistic sensitivity, capturing both the drama of combat and the daily experiences of soldiers. After the war, Forbes continued to paint landscapes, genre scenes, and historical subjects, maintaining a reputation for his meticulous technique and narrative clarity. Today, his drawings and watercolors are valued both as historical records and as fine examples of 19th-century American military art.
