The Indian Rajput tradition of miniature art developed in the 9th Century CE, and eventually evolved into two separate categories, Pahari and Rajasthani. Small-scale, highly detailed images, the Pahari school in particular came to focus on stark monochromatic backgrounds and individuals in the midst of everyday activities. Often incorporating storytelling elements due to having origins in manuscript illustration, many of the paintings depict scenes from Indian mythology, culture, history, and daily life, showing weddings, festivals, and street scenes.
